Abstract or brief introduction of the workshop

There is a current consensus that the treatment of traumatized clients needs careful preparation and utmost care. The standard approach in trauma therapy uses the framework of a phase-oriented treatment:
(1) safety, stabilization and symptom reduction,
(2) working directly and in depth with traumatic memories, and
(3) identity integration and rehabilitation.
The intensity and duration of the phases vary depending on the severity and complexity of the client¨s traumatization. Specifically in the beginning of the treatment the therapist has not only to recognize clients¨ deficits but also to address those resources that could ameliorate coping strategies. Using the framework of the phase-oriented treatment and the theory of structural dissociation of the personality, this workshop will help participants understand essential preparatory work, get to know stabilization techniques and offer an overview of possible trauma confronting approaches, including EMDR.
