Abstract or brief
introduction of the workshop
|
Many therapy clients have experiences that are difficult for themselves or for their counselors. I have explored ways of working with three kinds of ¡°difficult process¡± within my own psychotherapy: fragile process, dissociated process and psychotic process.
-
Clients who are experiencing ¡®fragile process¡¯ have difficulty holding particular experiences in attention at moderate levels of intensity, and feel high levels of shame about their experiences
- Clients who experience ¡®dissociated process¡¯ quite convincingly experience themselves as having selves that are not integrated with each other for periods of time.
- Clients who experience ¡®psychotic process¡¯ have difficulty speaking in ways that make sense. They may see hallucinations or hear voices.
This workshop will explore ways that counselors can understand and respond effectively to the experiences of clients who are in the middle of these various forms of difficult process. The workshop will include role-play demonstrations of clients and will offer opportunities for participants to try out their own responses. ¡¡ |
