Abstract or brief introduction of the workshop

This 2 day workshop will focus on the Foundations of Satir Family Therapy.

We will introduce the basic beliefs the approach is based on.

A faith in human beings and their ability to manage their lives out of strength, inner motivation and personal responsibility
Providing hope that change is possible

The theoretical background of the model
Focus on the positive: towards health, promoting a view of the world and people that builds on possibilities, internal resources, personal choice and self validation.
The concept of self validation and connecting
The three generational approaches to family therapy with major transformational possibilities.
Satir¡¯s communication theory: changing dysfunctional communication patterns to healthy and functional patterns
Transformational therapy that works on various levels of people¡¯s internal processes

TOOLS
Sculpting: the use of experiential learning: a viable mode for change
The focus on the Therapist instead of any specific techniques as the major change agent.

CV of the trainer

Biography & Abstract - Maria Gomori, PhD, MSW

Born in Budapest, Hungary in 1920, Maria left in 1956, after the Hungarian Revolution with her husband and son and settled in Canada. She currently lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and travels regularly to Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, and throughout China teaching the Satir Model.

She has a PhD in Therapeutic Counseling from The Open International University. She received her Master of Social Work from the University of Manitoba in 1966. She also holds a Bachelor in Economics from Marx-Engels University in Hungary and a Bachelor of Arts from the Sorbonne in.Paris.

Maria has worked for over 40 years in the field of Human Relations. She is a Master Programmer and Certified Practitioner in Neuro-Linguistic Programming and is an Approved Supervisor with the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy.

Maria worked for 26 years in a teaching hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba as the Director of Social Work. She developed a family therapy training program while an Associate Professor with the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba.

She is a 20-year associate of Virginia Satir, and an Advanced Trainer in Satir¡¯s Avanta International Training Network ( now Virginia Satir Global Network)since 1981, Maria is the co-author, with Virginia Satir et al of The Satir Approach to Communication and Satir Model: Family Therapy and Beyond. She published her autobiography ¡°Passion for Freedom¡± in 2001.

¡¡Maria has received an Order of Merit presented by the Hungarian Government in 1950 for outstanding
   organizational work in the field of planning. She is the recipient of the Governor Generals' Canadian
   Silver Jubilee medal
. Maria was presented with a Special Recognition Award by the Board of Avanta
   and, in 2005, she was given the Living Treasure Award from the Virginia Satir Network.The YMCA granted
   her the Woen of Distinction award In the category of Health and Wellness May 1st, 2003.

Maria is an international workshop leader with a unique way of creatively integrating her own life wisdom with that of Satir and other great teachers.
